About Us

Cancer Rehab Inc. is now closed.  Our last day of operation was February 26th, 2009.  Please send any inquiries to info@cancer-rehab.ca.

In 2008 Cancer Rehab founders Jodi Steele and Ira Henderson were hired as consultants to design and develop an exercise program for a cancer resource organization called Wellspring.

In January 2009 Jodi Steele helped launch the program and remains one of the program leaders.  If you would like to join the Wellspring program please contact their Halton-Peel office at 905-257-1988 or 1-877-499-9904.  You can also visit them on the web at www.wellspring.ca.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers who have helped us over the years.  With their help we have achieved our goal of creating awareness about the importance of exercise, one of the fundamentals of a cancer-free life.

Our Beginning

Most people who undergo treatment for cancer experience residual physical impairments such as generalized weakness, orthopedic problems and lymphedema.  Until recently there has been nothing in the community to support the impairments of these individuals.

Physiotherapist Jodi Steele and her husband Ira Henderson recognized the need and donated the required funds to establish Cancer Rehab Inc., a not-for-profit organization based in Hamilton, Ontario.  Cancer Rehab Inc. opened its doors in 2005 with the goal of offering affordable physiotherapy for anyone with cancer.

Statement of Purpose

Cancer Rehab’s primary purpose is to provide comprehensive cancer rehabilitation to individuals living with cancer.  Cancer Rehab is working towards having rehabilitation become a standard of practice in the treatment of cancer in Canada.  Cancer Rehab believes this will help to eliminate unnecessary suffering and preventable death due to cancer and its treatments.

Vision Statement

To have rehabilitation become a standard practice in the treatment of cancer in Canada.

Mission Statement

To provide and teach rehabilitation skills to individuals living with cancer.

Objectives

Cancer Rehab’s main objective is to gain maximum support of individuals who bridge the gap between patients with cancer and our rehabilitation program.  Cancer Rehab’s secondary objective is to secure continuous funding and support to ensure the longevity of our service.

Client Philosophy

Cancer Rehab Inc. goes to great lengths to provide the opportunity for our clients to feel as comfortable as possible.  We have focused attention on the following:

  • Pressure Free Environment
    • We work with our client’s schedules so they don’t feel it is a chore to take part in our program.
    • We always call to check in on multi-day absentees but we make it very clear we are not reprimanding them.
  • Stress Free Environment
    • We allow for lots of laughter by making jokes and even dancing for entertainment.
    • We show interest in client’s lives and their families so they will share any concerns they might be having.
  • Inviting Environment
    • Our décor consists of vibrant colours.  We believe this creates an exciting place to work out.
    • We play music spanning the decades.  We witness our clients singing along to their favourite songs.  Nostalgia equals comfort.
